Most Popular Wedding Dress Materials Glossary

We all know that today wedding dresses can come in all different types of fabric, so let us take you on a journey and run you through all possible material options you can choose from when pick out your favorite dress.

Since the dawn of time wedding dresses have been associated with one particular material, namely satin.

Satin today is and has always been on the peak of its popularity, but while being sought out by many, people often have blurred ideas of what satin actually is. Often mistaken for fiber is in fact a finish. It can be both synthetic, as well as natural, as it can be made of polyester, silk, or even a blend of two.

Another fabric, as timeless as Satin, is Lace. The fact that your great grandmother might have worn a lace wedding dress as well as every other woman in every generation of your family may be the reason why you also dream about a wedding dress made of lace. With the elegance and grace it adds to the look of the beautiful bride, lace is for sure not going anywhere any time soon. With many variations, such as the delicate soft Lace Chantilly or the stiffer cutwork Lace Richelieu to name a few, you have always plenty of options and looks to choose from.

Another material, which is absolutely essential to the wedding gown industry is silk. Silk is a beautiful multi-functional fabric that can be woven into other fabrics, such as satin, charmeuse or organza and chiffon…

Then there is a category of materials that are sought after for their lightweight quality and settle sheerness. The fundamental material in this category is Chiffon.

Another fabric, sharing similar features is Organza. It is just as light and sheer as Chiffon, but with a stiffer net, which means it holds its shape much better.

And the last, but certainly not least in this category is Tulle. Tulle is also very similar to the two aforementioned materials, however it has a fine net and does not wrinkle as easily as Chiffon. By layering Tulle under the skirt part of the dress, you will get the majestic puffy princess look without the need of wearing any additional petticoats!

You may have heard of a fabric called Charmeuse, but you’re probably also wondering what exactly it is. This material with a glossy finish drapes very easily. It can be made both out of silk as well as synthetic fibers, but no matter what it is made of, it adds a very luxurious look to the outfit. It is without a doubt worth mentioning, as it is a classic wedding dress fabric, but often not the first choice of most of the designers this season.
